A Choir of Angels: From Left Hand Shutter (detail). A fragment, probably of 1455-60, from the tops of the shutters of the high altarpiece in the abbey of Saint Bertain in Saint-Omer, northern France. The altarpiece itself, of precious metal, made in 1455-9 is now lost. The inside shutters depict episodes from the life of St Bertin, a Franish abbot famed for his learnings and sanctity in his monastery at Saint-Omer.
Simon Marmion is metnioed in amiens in 1449-54. No paintings are documented, but the panels of 'The Soul of Saint Bertain' are accepted as key works.
