The town grew up around the castle built by Richard de Burgo in the early 13th century, became a royal borough, a wealthy trading centre and arms were granted the town about 1580: ‘a golden galley with one mast and sails furled, floating on the waves, and hanging from the mast a black shield bearing a golden lion.’
