    The Virgin and Child with a Pomegranate (detail) is from the Workshop of Sandro Boticelli, about 1445-1510. Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in Florence, the smart sharp-witted Botticelli began by painting religous frescoes. He joined the Compagnia di San Lucain in 1472 and was most creative from 1478-90.
